At Randolph Electric, we’re always looking for ways to help our members use energy wisely and keep monthly bills as low as possible. One of the best tools we offer is Time-of-Use (TOU) rates—a smart, simple way to save by shifting when you use electricity, not how much you use.
Here’s the idea: the cost of electricity changes based on demand. During “peak hours”—usually weekday afternoons and early evenings—demand on the grid is high, and electricity costs more. During “off-peak hours”—early morning, late evening, and overnight—demand is lower, and rates are more affordable.
If you can shift some of your household energy use to those off-peak times, you’ll pay less for the same electricity.
For example:
- Do laundry in the early morning or late evening, between peak hours.
- Run the dishwasher overnight using a delay-start feature.
- In the summer, pre-cool your home in the morning, helping the need to only raise the thermostat a couple degrees in the afternoon.
- Charge electric vehicles overnight when demand on the grid is low.
- Even small shifts—like using the oven or vacuuming after peak hours—can make a difference over time.
This kind of timing isn’t about going without—it’s about making your energy work smarter, especially in a place like ours where summer temperatures can drive up demand fast.
Randolph EMC’s TOU program is completely voluntary, and it’s a great fit for members who have some flexibility in their daily routines.
